Mentor-Mentee Framework To Build the Next Generation Of Cloud Native

Context

Hey Everyone, My name is Vamshi Reddy. So recently I attend kubecon + cloudnativecon north America 2022 virtually, and I attend some of the best sessions from the student track and 101 track. One of the Sessions is about "Mentor-Mentee Framework To Build the Next Generation Of Cloud Native" by Civo. Shout-out to Kunal Kushwaha and Mark Boost for this amazing session.

Introdution

Often Student gets this question, How do we find a mentor and How do we get in touch with them?

So the answer is pretty simple, you can go to Twitter or Linkedin and there you follow them. Follow people on social media but not just follow them, network with them like What work they are doing, learn more from their experiences and engage with them.

One important thing, please don't be afraid to reach out to them and don't message 'hi', ask a relevant question, so that it will save them time.

Being a Good Mentee

So this is after you find a mentor. First thing first, please respect your mentor, their time is very valuable and you should realise that they have a very busy schedule.

If you show some responsibility to your mentor then they also would appreciate that. Now, for example, you are contributing to some open-source project and you are stuck somewhere, you ask the maintainer for some help. Now, most of the time they will direct you to some resources like "Hey, you check out these docs or some resources". So you have to value their time.

Honour your Commitments which means that when you schedule a meeting and you are late to that meeting, it is wasting the time of the mentor. And if your mentor reschedules a meeting, then make yourself available for that meeting because they have a busy schedule.

It's a two-way relationship

It is always a two-way relationship between mentor and mentee.

It's not always the mentor giving guidance to the mentee but the also Mentee gives back to the mentor in the form of

  • contributing to their open-source project.
  • writing blogs.
  • offering any kind of help to the community or to the mentor.
  • being polite and respectful.

Being a good Mentor

For Mentors, the most important thing is to build trust with your mentee. EMPATHY is key. It's not going to work, and the relationship not going to work if we can't build that trust and openness.

It is not always about the work, we should get to know the person like their family, friends, and special interests(like movies, sports, food, travels....)

AGAIN! It's a two-way relationship

As I said, It is always a two-way relationship between mentor and mentee.

It is true that a Mentee learns a lot from a mentor but that does not mean that mentor does not learn a thing from his/her mentee.

Have fun, don't make it too structured

Make your Session more, it should not always be pure learning but also have some unstructured sessions where the mentor and mentee discuss general things like life in general. This can lead to proper understanding between the mentor and mentee.

Create an environment for honest and constructive feedback

Whether you are Mento or Mentee, always ready to take constructive feedback because it will only lead to your betterment only. Sometimes mentee takes the feedback to their heart, please don't do that. You Should always maintain an open relationship between mentor and mentee.
